Stanley-
The Tutsis and the Hutus were just cattle owners at first. Then, Germans came along and colonized the people of Rwanda in 1894. Since the Tutsis looked more European, they were given the roles of responsibility. In 1933, Belgians gave the Tutsis all the leadership positions, this upset the Hutus. When a revolution occurred in Rwanda, instigated by Hutus, the Belgians switched the roles of the Tutsis and the Hutus. This decision made the Tutsis angry. For decades there was hatred between the Hutus and the Tutsis. The Rwandan Genocide was a tragic event created by the Hutus. At 8:30 p.m., on April 6, 1994, a plane was returning from a summit in Tanzania when a missile shot it down. President Juvenal Habyarimana of Rwanda was on this plane. No one knew who had fired the missile, however Hutu extremists blamed the Tutsis. Within 24 hours, Hutu extremists took over the government and started the slaughter. For one-hundred days, people were getting slaughtered in Rwanda. Men, women, and children were being slaughtered in churches, schools, hospitals, and all over Rwanda.
The Rwanda Genocide ended in mid July 1994. The Rwandan Patriotic Front, a trained military group consisting of Tutsis who had been exiled in earlier years, slowly took over the country. They cut off the government supply routes and took advantage of the corrupt social order. The R.P.F. completely took over Rwanda on July 17th. By the time the genocide was over, approximately 800,000 Hutus and Tutsis had been slaughtered.
After several years, Rwanda has changed a lot. Rwanda is known as one of the safest places to walk in Africa. Mobiles, internet cafes, functional hospitals, and constant construction all exist in Rwanda today. Rwanda didn't have ATMs nor supermarkets, however today there are multiple supermarkets, and over a dozen international ATMs. But, that's not just all of the amazing things Rwanda has today, there are also a lot of hotels, access to running water and electricity for most people, some schools, and much more. Rwanda has changed so much that even there are plenty of tourists that visit Rwanda each year. Rwanda definitely has come a long way from the genocide.
The Rwandan Genocide was a very bad experience for those who died, and for those who survived. Men, women, and children who were in the genocide will forever be scarred by the deaths of their loved ones. Thus, everyone needs to try to move on from the past and look forward to the future. Rwanda today isn't so bad, actually it has improved. Once a place full of murderering has become known as one of the safest places to walk in Africa. About 10 years from now, Rwanda can possibly be on par with Brazil and Thailand. Rwanda will continue to grow on from the unfortunate genocide that had occurred.
