Genocide is the mass-killing of one specific group with the intent to destroy the existence of the group. The most recent, the Rwanda genocide involves 2 groups, the Hutus and the Tutsis. These 2 dominant tribes had been massacring each other in 2 countries Rwanda and Burundi for the past decades. In 1994, the Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana,a Hutu, was killed because his plane was shot down right above the airport. The hutus became angry because they believed that the Tutsis were the ones that shot down the plane. In response, they started the Rwandan genocide with the intention to kill all the Tutsi once and for all. The genocide resulted in approximately 800,000 deaths in a matter of only 100 days.
During the Rwanda genocide, many innocent Tutsis were slaughtered innocently just because of the fact that the Hutus believed that the Tutsis killed the Hutu president. However, until this day, nobody knew who really shot down the plane.During the genocide, life was extremely scary for the Tutsis. Some tried hiding inside churches, hospitals, and schools. However, the Hutus were still able to find them. In the genocide, innocent men, women, and even children were killed. The Tutsis were tired, scared, and sick of it. They wanted this to stop once and for all. So, they gathered up with the RPF( Rwandan patriotic front) and started being on the offense. All they want to do is take over Rwanda to stop the genocide.
The RPF consisted were trained military consisted of exiled Tutsi soldiers. After these Tutsis saw many other of their kind being slaughtered innocently, they wanted to help them and revenge for their family members. Even though the Tutsis were thinner and weaker than the Hutus, they won strategically. They beated the Hutus slowly and step by step. Their first step was cutting off the government supply routes. Since the Hutus were walking around killing innocent Tutsis, they needed weapons and food to refill their energy. Eventually, if they run out of supplies , they will need more supplies. The Hutu government will have to supply these. The RPF knew that the Hutus will eventually run out of supplies. When the Hutu government send supplies to the Hutus, the RPF consisting of the Tutsis ambushed the Hutus. They killed the Hutus and took their supplies. Gradually, the Hutus without the supplies became weaker. This was the first turning point of this battle.
As the Hutus became weaker, the RPF and the Tutsis started to fight back and they were able to scare some Hutus away. Slowly, they can smell victory. By taking advantage of the weakened Hutu government, the RPF started to be on the aggressive side. They were able to take over Rwanda slowly by invading from neighboring countries. First, the RPF took over Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Eventually, on July,18,1994, the RPF took over Rwanda and ended the genocide. After the war, The RPF were considered heroes to the Tutsis. After it ended, a transitional government was sworn with Pasteur Bizimungu as the president. The Rwanda Genocide's impact was huge. Out of the 800,000 estimated deaths, 300,000 of those were children. It must've been heartbreaking for parents to see their children die. Additionally , 95,000 children lost their parents, becoming orphans. The United Nations were not helpful at all at stopping the Rwanda genocide. The major powers were reluctant to lend a hand to these poor innocent people. The only thing the united Nations did was sending aid workers and troops to maintain orders and bring back basic services after the genocide ended.
To make sure the Rwanda genocide doesn't happen again, i believe there need to be more economically opportunities as well as population control. I believe that the main causes of the Rwandan genocide was not only because of the plane accident. The Rwandan genocide was actually the product of a population that was growing rapidly combined with the fact that there was very little economic development or economic opportunity other than farming. As land pressures increased, the people faced the choice to either starve to death or else stir up violence to kill off some of the surplus population. Hopefully , tragedies like genocide will never happen again in the future.
